Jalapão

Situated in the eastern region of Tocantins, with 34,000 square kilometers in extension, Jalapão is a region comprising eight counties, but only four of them are part of our eco-touristic route: Ponte Alta, Mateiros, São Felix and Novo Acordo (see map on the package page). The region has natural tourist attractions that fascinates mind and heart as they hit deep in what is rare in us: the emotion. Going through their lands, its desert surrounded by waters makes us reflective front of beauties that only divine explains. Mountain ranges and plateaus, voluminous rivers full of waterfalls, the crafts golden grass, the dunes and the rich fauna make this region a mandatory place to meet on Planet Earth. The touristic area is situated within the Parque Estadual do Jalapão – PEJ, an important national ecological heritage, crossed by rivers and landscapes of great environmental sensitivity.

Impactful View! The entire Rio Novo flows in two horseshoe-shaped waterfalls. The access by the footbridge carries the visitor close to the waterfall. The panoramic of surrounding view is like a film overlooking the mountains range of the Serra do Espírito Santo and paths cut by streams. The tour is usually held at the end of the aafternoon in order to contemplate the sunset, when the dunes obtain a yellowish color. It is one of the favorite tourist places in Jalapão.

Remnants of slaves, the Quilombo Communities of Mumbuca and Prata are cultural resistance brood which has in the Capim Dourado (golden grass) craftwork their main source of revenue. These communities have strong presence of legendary figures as Dona Miúda (now deceased), the artisan from Mumbuca and Mãe Tico, accoucheuse from Prata. Every year in September the residents of Mumbuca celebrate the traditional party of Colheita do Capim Dourado (the golden grass harvest). In turn, the Community of Prata celebrates the Festa da Rapadura (feast of brown sugar).

"Passarim do Jalapão", the written song by Dorivã, reminds the winsome geography of Jalapão, "your hills inspire dreams, creating mysteries and legends, drawing temples on stones shaped, things I do not even know how to sing ..." Naturally faceted the Serra da Catedral (cathedral mountain range) shapes an art at its tip that resembles the frontage of a cathedral. Another example of this scenic beauty, is the Morro dos Macacos (monkeys hill), with reddish color and located in the County of Novo Acordo. Its formation remembers the figure of three monkeys.

Two walls approximately 12m height form the Sussuapara Canyon, located in Ponte Alta do Tocantins. Waters glide smoothly through the cracks forming a small stream. The walls becoming funneled create an environment where you feel protected by nature. The surrounding forest makes a nice and charming place.

It is a tourist attraction close to Ponte Alta do Tocantins - city considered as the gateway of Jalapão. The sandstone formation is about 100m long. The trail to get there is short and safe. The location offers a beautiful view of the savannah. The hole in the larger stone provides angles for beautiful pictures at sunset, at which time the maracanãs macaws fly over the site.
